Abstract
Splenic abscess is an uncommon entity, occuring in 0.14% to 0.7% of several autopsy series. These early reports asserted that splenic abscesses were due primarily to typhoid fever, malaria, bacterial endocarditis, bacteremia and sickle
hemoglobinopathies. According to recent report, splenic abscesses are related to infection in contiguous organs, infected traumatic hematomas and metastatic bacteremia. Combination therapy of splenectomy with broad spectrum antibiotic is the
treatment
of choice. We report a splenic abscess developed in the patient with diabetes mellitus after dental extraction and cured by broad spectrum antibiotic and percutaneous drainage. (Korean J Gastroenterl 1994 ; 26 : 389-392)
